wplogo_75    PLANTS FROM WHISPERING PINES

The following is a "general description" of the different types of plants that we carry.  You will want to follow the page links attached to this page to see pictures, specific descriptions, colors, sizes, and growth habits of the various plants.  If you have any questions about any of the types of plants or the availability of a specific plant, be sure to contact us and let us know how we can help.  Be patient with us as we develop and provide this information for your perusal.

Hostas

Hostas generally are either yellow, blue, or green in color.  They are shade-loving plants primarily with some a little more sun tolerant.  The "plantain lily" will come in solid colors, undulated, or variegated.  The variegated varieties have the "alternate coloring" on the outside of the leaves, while the undulated variety has the alternate coloring in the center of the leaf.  Blue hostas will maintain their blue coloring so long as the wax on the leaves is not disturbed or burned off by the sun.  Blue hostas need nearly all shade to maintain their blue lustre.  We have a large variety of hostas available in the medium, large, and giant sizes.  All hostas are sold in 1 gallon pots.

Blue Hostas:

Hostas are among the few perennials with blue leaves.  The leaves are actually green, underlying a waxy coating.  This coating of wax on the leaf may persist throughout the summer, or be washed off from rain, watering, sun exposure, or other environmental factors.  Therefore, some hostas will lose the bluish-coloring and turn green at various times during the season.  Blue hostas add interesting color to an otherwise all green garden.  They grow best with less direct sun exposure.

Gold Hostas:

Gold hostas are bred for their bright gold leaf coloration and can be used to brighten up a dark area.  They also work well as a contrast with dark-colored foliage or blue-leaved hostas.  Generally, gold hostas will tolerate brighter light conditions.

White Variegated Hostas:

White variegated hostas stand out as single specimens or in groups.  However, some of the solid color leaf varieties combined with the white variegated can tone down the busy look of too much variegation.  If the white is in the center of the leaves, it is called "undulated"; if the white is on the outer edge, it is called "variegated".  Direct sun exposure can sometimes be too harsh for the white variegation and may cause it to burn and turn brown.  This will not harm the plant; however, you may want to move the plant to another location with less sun.

Gold Variegated Hostas:

Gold variegated hostas stand out as single specimens or can be massed for a bold statement.  The gold variegation or undulation, being more muted than white variegation, blends more easily in a mixed planting of hosta varieties.  They tolerate varying amounts of light exposure, usually more than white variegated varieties.

 Daylilies

Whispering Pines carries a wide variety of daylilies, including the ever popular Stella de Oro which is a continuous bloomer.  The majority of our daylilies are rebloomers.  Daylilies are very hardy and easy to grow.  They provide a nice color accent to any garden and are a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies.  All daylilies are sold in 1 gallon pots.

 Geraniums

Our geraniums are raised from cuttings and are multi-branching rather than real tall.  With proper dead-heading, the blooms will provide gorgeous color through the summer and into fall.   The cuttings supplied through Oglevee are of the highest quality and sturdiest stock.  The colors are magnificent and striking.  This is just about the only annual plant that we grow here, but they have fast become a favorite with our clients.  We also carry the geranium called "Citronella", commonly known as the "misquito plant".  Geraniums are sold in 4.5 inch pots or trays of 15, or we have beautiful 12" terra cotta patio pots for your enjoyment.  The geraniums sell fast, so you will want to visit us starting the first of May to get your geranium selections early.

 Perennials

Carrying a wide variety of perennials, you will want to check out the perennial page for yourself.  Carrying many of the garden standards as well as native plants, you will want to consider some of these for your flower gardens this year.  Perennials are generally low maintenance since they come back each year.  To encourage more blooming, it is sometimes appropriate to "deadhead" the plants, or you may need to thin them out over time, but unlike the geraniums or other annuals, you need only plant them once and then enjoy them for years to come.  Perennials are sold primarily in one gallon pots; some may be in two gallon.

Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental Grasses can be used to accent or contrast with other perennial plants in your flower garden, or can be used as an edging or border.  The larger grasses have also been used as a fencing or privacy barrier between properties.  Grasses are enjoyable in both the summer days as well as over the winter, providing a nice contrast in the landscape.  The golden, bronze, and red of the dried fronds over the winter still bring life to an otherwise bland exterior.  They also provide cover the the birds during the cold season.  Most of the grasses will show their plumes in late fall.  Some people like to cut off the grasses for the winter, but many prefer to wait until early spring.   Sold in 1 gallon, 2 gallon, 3 gallon pot sizes.

Ornamental Bushes
 Chrysanthemums

Providing a variety of colors in the hardy mums, you will want to check out our Chrysanthemum selection.  We get our cuttings from Yoder Brothers, one of the very best growers and provider of mums.  We grow all our mums in 10" mum pans and purchase our plugs with both color and bloom time in mind - buying each color grouping in early , midseason, and late varieties providing us with mums blooming from August through October.
